Three Chicago-Area Students Won Cash for College

CHICAGO, Ill. – Saving your pennies isn’t tough, it’s smart. Three Chicago-area students won cash for college by demonstrating just that in the 2017 Money Smart Kid Essay Contest. COUNTRY Financial® asked 5th through 8th-graders to answer the following questions: Do you think there is a connection between financial health and physical health? What can a city, state or national policymaker do to help promote financially healthier citizens?

Gabrielle Cisneros an 8th-grader at John H. Kinzie Elementary was given the first place prize, a $3,000 scholarship for her response about investing in herself and her financial future.

“I need to invest in myself by being physically healthy,” Cisneros said. “In order for me to be financially healthy, I have to invest my money through stocks and bonds so it grows steadily for when I retire.”

Runners-up Jada Watson of Parker Junior High and David Luna-Pascua of Ogden International each received $1,000 scholarships. Winners were announced during the Money Smart Week Kick Off on Wednesday, April 12, at the 2017 Financial Literacy Summit at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
