Baptism of Baby Fred Tenzin Tsai Phillips

On the bright sunny day of Sunday July 9, 2017, the healthy, handsome, and buoyant 7-month old New York-born son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Aileen “Mei” (nee Tsai) was baptized at the Saint Walter’s Catholic Church in Roselle, Illinois.

His very proud maternal grandparents are Engineer Fred and Mrs. Nora Tsai, a couple well-known in the Chicagoland area and in the Philippines, for their socio-civic community activities and philanthropy. Mr. Fred Tsai is a Purdue graduate, and was an executive in the design of nuclear power plants at Sargent & Lundy, while Mrs. Nora (nee Alviz) Tsai is a Nursing alumna of the University of Santo Tomas. She is currently a Board member of the PMAC and Auxiliary Medical Foundation. Both have been invaluable members of the PMAC medical-surgical missions in the past.

The remarkable and solemn Baptism, was followed by a grand luncheon reception at the Eaglewood Resort. As explained by grandpa Fred, his grandson’s second name “Tenzin” is Tibetan in origin, and that he is now namesake to the current 14th Dalai Lama. In Buddhism dharma, “Tenzin” means “cosmic law and order”; and in common parlance – though there is no direct Western language equivalency – it means the “right way of living” and the “path of rightness.” However, Ankong (“grandpa” in Chinese) said that he was told by a Chinese friend that the “real” Chinese version of “Tenzin” is “heaven angel or angel from the sky.”

The wonderful celebration had included the introduction of all of bubbly Baby Fred Tenzin’s immediate family members. There was singing, dancing, parlor games, and of course … a sumptuous table! Unfortunately all too soon, the afternoon had to end! It was indeed a fun-filled and memorable day! (By Dr. Ramon Lopez)
