Summer is almost over!

The heat of summer is still raging. There is still a little time to be out in the sun and to have some fun. I was in California towards the end of July to the first week of August. I spent real quality time with my mom and a couple of friends, which took us to the sunny and beautiful coastal area of Newport Beach. The water was so inviting, and we wasted no time to take a dip in our swimsuits. We fit in with the crowd of preppy people, but most of them are blondes who, just like us, spent the last days of summer too. We explored the fascinating sights of California, restaurant hopping and enjoying the long walks. With going back to school in the Fall just around the corner, I am so excited to be back in the hallways, preparing for exams and clinical rotations. I expect this time to be more challenging as my nursing courses are mostly the meat of the nursing program. While I have just three semesters left, I am overwhelmed by the many changes around us. For one, we will be back to classroom lectures face to face. There is the surge of new covid cases mostly affecting the unvaccinated. There is still the risk of contracting new covid variants even if you are vaccinated. For all its worth, I would like to tell people to stay safe, use your best judgement to protect yourself, and be a good example to others of how it is to be safe. For this month, these young FilAms have something to say about their dreams and aspirations in life. If you want to be featured in my column, please email me at tejerokayla@gmail.com.

Kevin Vivaldo says, “I wish to help my family with my education by being able to seek bigger opportunities than the generation before. My family’s strong unity has been a major factor in motivating me to continue college even when it is challenging.”

Christine Sayson says, “As a Filipino American freshman student, I want to work hard in my studies to be a successful Physical Therapist. By the time I graduate, I want to have a charity that helps others who can’t afford physical therapy.”

Isabella Viejon says, “As a Filipino American college student, I hope to obtain my license as an esthetician. Although I’m not attending a traditional University, these unprecedented times have led me to a different route where I am open to an abundance of opportunities to further my licensure in other specialties in the skincare field. After graduating, my goal is to work at a dermatologist/ plastic surgeon office as an esthetic assistant to find my own niche.”

Angela Castro, “ As a Filipino American college student, I want to gain more knowledge and social skills during my time at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After graduation, I want to attend graduate school and obtain my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. With that, I want to submerge myself with filipino culture and make new friends by joining FIA (Filipino in Alliance at UIC).”
