Last Days of Summer

The beginning of August marks the impending end of summer. Hard to think, but soon, we will head back to school season to start the Fall semester. This means buying school supplies, getting new backpacks and possibly new wardrobe! This is the last month until we are “back to reality” and occupied with the heavy demands of school. This summer has given me an exciting taste and blissful joy of being 21. I can buy alcohol, drink legally, and socially. I am no longer considered to be dependent on my parents in most of my decisions (though I still get support from them greatly). It is safe to say that I can finally go out to the bars and restaurants and order a drink without being ID’d! This month especially is exciting because I am approaching my final and last semester of nursing school. It seems like just a day ago I was a scared freshman taking my general education classes. They always say that life goes way too fast and that we should slow down and enjoy every moment of today. I strongly believe in this saying, as it reminds us to not worry about the past and future, but rather to live fully in the moment. With that said, let us hear from our four featured college students!

Joden Soberano says, “While in school one of my goals has been creating a space where Filipino students feel welcomed and part of a community. By leading a small group, I have been able to see my goal come to life. The intersection of ministry and culture where everyone is able to be themselves has been the highlight of my college career so far. Ministry and outreach is something I plan to continue after graduating.”

Earl Joshua Penados says, “As an Asian American college student I always aim to keep an open mind to diversity and inclusivity; This can range from everyday interactions to larger events within my college organizations. I want to be able to stay true to my personal morals by treating any and all individuals the same, no matter their demographic or how they identify. I believe every new person is an opportunity to learn and grow from a new perspective. After graduation, I aim to become a registered dietician, where I will institute my beliefs by providing the best and equal care to all patients.”

Camryn Calvo says, “As the first in my family to attend university and to study abroad, I aspire to learn how to adapt and thrive in the United States as an individual during my college years. I hope to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and commission as an Officer in the United States Army.”

Jennifer Schaumberg says, “I hope to represent and be a voice to Asian-Americans especially to the adoptees. Growing up in a predominantly non-Asian area, I felt very isolated and different based on appearances and home life. Thus, I would love to be able to be a voice for those who feel as I did as a college student and after.”
