New Year’s Resolutions: Staying Out of Legal Trouble after the Holidays

Christmas is a special holiday for many Filipinos since the vast majority of the country is Roman Catholic. While the holidays do bring people together, sometimes families cannot get over prior disputes.

Below are some of the most common disputes I have seen that make holidays difficult:

1. Staying together for the sake of the children. The holidays beginning in November through January is the slowest part of the year for my business. Most people do not want to divorce during the holidays. I don’t blame them. However, if this is the third consecutive holiday season you are pretending that your marriage is working, it is time to consider a change in 2020. Make this the last holiday you are miserable in your marriage.

2. Debts. I Don’t let your “ya bang” nature get you into financial trouble. Many people spend a lot of money they don’t have over the holidays. Try to stay within your budget because credit card bills can get out of hand. Also, if you have surplus money, be careful about loaning money to family and friends.

3. Death and issues with Money. Family gatherings can be very difficult when loved ones pass away. However, these situations are further complicated when there are disputes over inheritances. Many of these conflicts can be avoided by having conversations with your loved ones before you pass away. Make sure you discuss your plans with your relatives. Then be sure to put your plans in writing.

Peace of mind is invaluable. If you want to discuss any potential legal issues, please contact me at (312) 546-5077 or janice@ pinaylaw.com.

Thank you for reading. Until we meet again, love one another.
