Chicago-based VIA Times Newsmagazine Selected Best Magazine in 2019 Migration Advocacy and Media Awards

Chicago, 4 December 2019 – Th e Philippine Consulate General in Chicago congratulates VIA Times Newsmagazine for winning the Print Journalism Award – Best Magazine on Migration category of the 2019 Migration Advocacy and Media (MAM) Awards.

The MAM Awards recognize the positive and significant contributions of media outlets, institutions and practitioners in the fields of print, radio, movie and television, advertising and internet from the government and private media organizations in the Philippines and abroad, in raising public awareness on issues on Filipino migration, advocating the cause of Filipinos overseas, or promoting a positive image of Filipinos overseas.

All the entries were screened and evaluated by the MAM Awards Committee composed of representatives from the CFO, Philippine Migrants Rights Watch (PMRW), Inter-Agency Committee on the Celebration of the Month of Overseas Filipinos (IAC-MOF), overseas Filipino sector, and media sector.

The awarding will be held in Manila on 17 December 2019.

Consul General Gina A. Jamoralin lauds VIA Times, led by Publisher Veronica Leighton and Co-Publisher Joe Mauricio, for its award-winning journalism and enduring service to the Filipino-American community in the Midwest. She urges VIA Times to continue raising awareness on Filipino migration and advocating for the interests of Filipinos overseas.

VIA Times is a monthly publication distributed free with a circulation of 25,000 printed copies, and is considered to be one of the largest ethnic publications of its kind in the U.S. It was established in August 1984 by Ms. Venus Veronica Bacatan Leighton, and together with Chicago Philippine Reports TV (CPRTV) is the only ethnic print/ broadcast combo media founded and managed by a woman in North America. VIA Times serves the Filipino/ Asian/Hispanic communities in Chicagoland. END
