Changing One’s Trajectory This Year 2023

Psalm 1 contrasts two lives – one dedicated in the pursuit of God’s treasure while the other is devoid of the life of God. The one who seeks God through His words and lives according to His laws is called “blessed.” The word “blessed” means joyful, fortunate, prosperous, favored by God. Here’s what it says in verse one: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”

In other words, the life trajectory of people who choose not to subscribe to the counsel of this world nor associate with people who reject the truth of God’s words is one of blessings, favor, and spiritual prosperity. As these people pursue God by constantly and regularly meditating upon His words “night and day” and “delighting in them” according to verse 2, they become a source of life, joy, and strength to others as well – like “a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season” (verse 3). They will live a fulfi lling and satisfying life. The promise is that they will become fruitful and prosperous “whose leaf shall not wither and whatever he does shall prosper” (verse 3).

“Not so,” for the person opposed to God declares this psalm-writer, “he is like a chaff that the wind blows away” (verse 4). What a sad description of a person who rejects God in his life. Jesus declared in John 6:63, “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” When we meditate upon the very words of God, they become a source of joy, wisdom, power, and strength. Without the precious words of God to direct and give life and light to our spirit, there is just deadness and darkness.

This powerful psalm ends with a beautiful promise and a terse caution, “For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous but the way of the wicked leads to destruction” (verse 6). To know by heart that God is watching over us, keeping us safe and secure, and guiding our every step is very reassuring and encouraging. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” It is His very words that guide our way and keep us on the straight and narrow way that leads to life.

We all have a choice to make – either to live for God or live for self. The trajectory of one’s life is radically altered for good when that person decides to live for God believing and trusting in His precious words.
