This year, the Philippine Independence Week Committee’s (PIWC) festivities were all held off due to the global pandemic. The COVID 19 has attempted to stop the FilAM community in celebrating this important historical event. Luckily, in January, PIWC had successfully staged its Kick-Off event at the Holiday Inn Chicago Northshore. That event was well-attended. The 2020-2021 muses were presented, and it showcased a well-organized variety musical and fashion shows.
Following the outstanding staging of the Kick-Off event, PIWC commemorated this year’s 122nd Philippine Independence Day through a virtual tribute. The online celebration was one of its kind, and many members in the FilAm community in Chicago hailed it as one of the fi rst and unique initiatives in the history of PIWC. The virtual celebration was participated by the Philippine Consul General of Chicago, Gina Jamoralin. She lauded the PIWC leadership for taking the initiative of virtual celebration in the Midwest. The PIWC Virtual Tribute Team is composed of JetJet Gruezo, Flor Castill, VT Columnist Kayla Tejero and yours truly.
PIWC Overall Chair, Jetjet Gruezo said that “the virtual celebration of 122nd Philippine Independence Day was timely, safe, and realistic response to our uncertain times. I am so glad that we came up with this idea, as we want to stay relevant even in the times of the pandemic.”
Starting this month of July and until next year, PIWC had started publishing on social media fl yers that introduce the muses, the members of the Board of Trustees and the Offi cers of PIWC 2020- 2021. It is the goal of PIWC to keep the community abreast and get connected with important personalities within the group. The PIWC Gala Event is tentatively scheduled in June 2021.
