The fun of summer is here, and I hope everyone is having a great time so far! Personally, I just wrapped up my fi rst class for the summer semester. It was great to have something to do, and allowed me to be productive during the quarantine. This month, on the 19th, I am so excited to celebrate my 19th birthday! My biggest birthday blessing this year is the scholarship worth $20,000 from the APIA/ United Health Foundation Scholarship. To God be the glory! Additionally, I am sure most of us are relieved to see not only our own state, but other states moving on to other phases of reopening. As time passes by, I hope we are all able to move forward to the other phases of reopening and gain a sense of normalcy. Let us hear from our four featured college students for this month! If you’d like to be featured, please email me at tejerokayla@gmail.com.

Gia Pendon says, “As a Filipino American college student, I hope to live up to my personal mission which is to “Be the change you wish to see in the world” by pursuing a degree in Accounting and Information Technology. While in college, I hope to immerse myself in my passions by taking leadership roles in clubs to advocate for Asian awareness and inspire young Filipinos to learn and embrace the beauty of their Filipino culture. After college, I look forward to promote diversity in the fi nancial sector and become a role model for young Filipino American women to show them that they can be successful in the fi nancial industry despite being under-represented.”

Joey Falconi says, “As a future educator, I want to be a mentor and inspire the next generation. I want to teach the youth the values I lived by growing up to help them succeed. It is my desire to stress the importance of cultural diversity, and how it makes us stronger as a nation. I want to show the world the strength of the Filipino community and that we can do anything we set our minds to.”

Dasha Pates says, “I hope to earn my two Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Communications prior to attending law school post-grad. My grandmother and great-grandfather were both attorneys, so I am proud to have immigrated here to continue their legacies. Once I earn my J.D. I aspire to gain more insights on American justice system as learning about it is my true passion. As a future practicing attorney-at-law, I want to make a difference in my community through legal work and volunteering pro-bono.”

Reanna Panlilio says, “Starting this fall, I will be serving as the treasurer of the UWM Filipino Student Union. As a Filipino American student, I hope to accomplish my dream of becoming a clarinetist. I strive to share my musical talents with the community so that more people can be introduced and inspired by music. Music has been proven to benefi t people’s health, which inspires me to keep studying and improving my musical skills. I hope to serve and learn more about my Filipino culture through my college career as well as my musical talents.”
