Ako, Tayo Ay Pilipino

June can be appropriately called as the Heart Month of Patriotism, as we celebrate the Philippine Independence Day and also the National Immigrant Heritage Month here in the United States.

Freedom is priceless, especially for a country that has experienced a history of foreign colonization for many years just like what happened to our beloved country, the Philippines. Every Filipino with a passion for patriotism, nationalism, and love of country looks up to the declaration of independence celebration as one of the most treasured milestones that the Filipinos achieved in its rich history.

On this day, we are commemorating the declaration of independence from the Spaniards led by General Emilio Aguinaldo 123 years ago, where a few respected heroes’ and heroines’ names have been recognized for their fights waged for their love of their country, such as Dr. Jose Rizal, and some modern-day Filipino heroes; likewise in remembering the courage and sacrifices by soldiers who fought for our motherland’s sovereignty. Let’s also add to this the sacrifices of front-liners and essential workers to help our country in times of need, like in this Covid pandemic. Their heroic stories have been written, read, and treasured by our loving Filipino citizens and non-citizens alike all over the world.

How to show your love for your own country? Here’s a quote from our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal: “I want to show to those who deprive people the right to love of country, that when we know how to sacrifice ourselves for our duties and convictions, death does not matter if one dies for those one loves—for his country and for others dear to him.”

We Filipinos are talented, skillful, resilient, brave and courageous people. We are Filipinos from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and from many parts of the world. But wherever we are, let us show that we are proud of our culture, heritage and tradition. Not only during the celebration of our historic independence but every day of our lives. ##
