March is Monthful of Celebrations, Salutes and Observances

Wonderful celebrations, festivals, and observances occur on this third month of the year that associates with Mars, Roman historic symbol for war, heroism, and strength. So, wonder why we are celebrating and focusing on women for this month of March? Do women actually symbolize strength, stamina, courage, victory, and power, instead of men? Women are especially honored in the U.S. this month from the first until the 31st of the month, and, of course, an international celebration on March 8th, International Women’s Day, focusing on the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women globally. It’s the day that we want to think, honor, and idolize the women who have inspired us in our lives.

Chicago Irish and non-Irish alike celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th where many bars color their drinks green and the Chicago River gets dyed dark green for the occasion, and celebrators wear green hats or outfits. Many say that St Paddy’s Day gets to be celebrated with wilder and more fun spirits in the cities of Chicago and New York, much more than in the country of Ireland.

Nationally, March is also the month of the beginning of spring and the planting season. More importantly, the Daylight Savings Time for “spring forward” starts for longer daytime activities. Meaning more enjoyment in our daily activities in the fun day lights.

For the religious aspects of our lives, Lenten season starts mostly in March, with sacred Easter Sunday falling on the same month, instead of April (not this year 2023 though).

Numerous, but smaller other events and celebrations, are being held, just too many to mention here. Here’s a couple, sharing from our state of Illinois, whether you believe it or not…

March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month in Illinois. “From heavy snowfall to dangerous winds….Illinois saw multiple tornadoes throughout the state, averages 53 tornadoes per year, followed by unseasonably- warm temperatures this year. Illinois ranks fourth in the U.S. for the most tornadoes per square mile, and communities are also susceptible to flooding, according to Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).

Illinois recognizes March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM, believe it or not). To raise awareness around gambling disorders and honor those in recovery, participating buildings in downtown Chicago will be lit teal and a statewide art contest will shine a spotlight throughout the month. IDHS will also partner with providers across the state to raise awareness around treatment options for those in need.##
