Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, ordained 19 permanent deacons on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago.
The newly ordained English and Spanish-speaking deacons were assigned to their home parishes, which this year includes parishes in: Arlington Heights, Berwyn, Brookfield, Chicago, Cicero, Des Plaines, Glenview, Grayslake, Ingleside, Oak Forest and Orland Park.
The 19 newly ordained deacons assisted the bishop and his priests in performing various ministries, including teaching the faith, preaching the Gospel, celebrating baptisms, leading the faithful in prayer, distributing holy communion, witnessing marriages, conducting wake and funeral services, and caring for the poor.
The deacons completed four-to six-year programs through the Institute for Diaconal Studies or the Instituto de Liderazgo Pastoral, both located at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein.
