The outbreak of violent and hate crimes against Asian Americans in New York and Atlanta triggered a call for actions among various groups to denounce hate sentiments on Asian Americans. Consequently, a wave of discussion on educating the public about hate crimes, its legal consequences, and protective measures for victims have been organized across America.

In Michigan, APIA Vote President, Willie Dechavez spearheaded an initiative that organized various Asian American communities to form the Asian Americans Against Hate Crimes. This initiative was adopted through a resolution in the cities of Warren and Sterling Heights. Both cities host many Filipino Americans and other Asian ethnic groups.

The resolution provided some of valuable facts and information to include:

Hateful rhetoric regarding COVID-19 has contributed to a spike in discrimination and acts of hate crimes toward Asian Americans. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 30 percent of Asian Americans have reported being subjected to discrimination. Incidents have included physical assault, workplace discrimination, shunning, refusal of service, verbal, and online harassment.

Many aggressions and hate acts are under reported in Asian American groups. According to Stop AAPI Hate, between March 19, 2020 and February 28, 2021, there have been 3,795 incidents reported from all 50 states, including 25 in Michigan.

Acts of hate and discrimination are antithetical to the values of Michiganders. The civic leaders are committed to promoting respect, inclusion, and creating a welcoming community for people of all races, national origins, and ethnicities.

Both Mayor Michael Taylor of Sterling Heights and Mayor James Fouts of Warren in Michigan applauded the initiative through a formal proclamation. Both Mayors condemn any hate crimes. All residents were urged to get involved in promoting safe and inclusive community. Everyone in the community was encouraged to report to local city law enforcement units all incidents so that perpetrators are held accountable.
