America 250 – the Spiritual Heritage that Built This Nation

Last July 4th, we celebrated America’s 250th founding anniversary. It was on July 4th, 1776, when the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, which was eventually signed on August 2, 1776. The second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence begins with these words:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The reference “endowed by their Creator” speaks of the abiding faith and dependence upon God by the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
The closing words affirm this belief: “With a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we must mutually pledge to each our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” Most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christians and strong believers in the Lord Jesus.
Our nation is, without a doubt, rooted in a very rich spiritual foundation and heritage. Before the Pilgrims arrived on our shores, they gathered below the deck of the Mayflower and signed the Mayflower Compact, which revealed their intent: “for the glory of God.” The Pilgrim Charter of 1620 states that its purpose was “to advance the enlargement of the Christian religion to the glory of God Almighty.”
President George Washington said, “It would be impossible to govern rightly without God and the Bible.” His words couldn’t be any truer, for the Bible states, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance” (Psalm 33:12). The principles of strong faith in divine Providence, prayer,
morality, generosity, hard work, diligence, and other virtues found in the Bible are inherently essential in building a strong society and a glorious nation. America is what it is today because of the godly heritage that has been built and passed on by our founding fathers throughout generations.
But there is a warning for us. Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 8:10-11, “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land He has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God…” There is danger of forgetting the Lord our God amid plenty and affluence. When freedom is used in the wrong way, we will lose the true essence of freedom itself. It results in the abuse of these God-given rights that could draw us away from Him.
