Filipino Couple in California Faces Human Trafficking and Wage Theft Charges
Rolando “Bobby” Solancho Corpuz and Maria Elsabel Sio Corpuz, a Filipino couple based in California, are facing serious criminal charges after being accused of exploiting undocumented Filipino caregivers at their elder care facilities.
According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the couple pleaded not guilty in April 2026 to charges including human trafficking and wage theft.
Prosecutors allege that between May 2023 and June 2024, caregivers were required to work extremely long hours, sometimes up to 24 hours a day and seven days a week, while receiving pay below California’s minimum wage. Authorities also allege that some workers were threatened with deportation if they complained and that wages were withheld under the pretense of immigration-related legal assistance.
The allegations involve two facilities: Rose Garden Vista in Vista, California, and Rose Garden Capo in Escondido, California.
Both accused individuals have pleaded not guilty, posted bail, surrendered their passports, and have been barred from operating care facilities without the required licenses while the case is pending.
If convicted, the couple could face significant prison sentences under California law.
The case has drawn attention within the Filipino community and highlights concerns surrounding labor exploitation, undocumented workers, and the challenges many victims face in reporting alleged abuse. (META)
