Lee Greenwood Will Perform `God Bless the U.S.A.’
The man who wrote the most iconic patriotic song in American history just got the stage he deserves.
Lee Greenwood will perform “God Bless the U.S.A.” in Washington, D.C., on June 24 as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration. He will be joined by opera singer Christopher Macchio performing “Nessun Dorma,” “Hallelujah,” “Ave Maria,” and “God Bless America” along with the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the Armed Forces Choir, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus.
We asked on this page whether Lee Greenwood should be performing at this celebration. The answer just came in.
Greenwood is 83 years old. He is the son of a Navy veteran who grew up working for the USO at military bases around Sacramento. He wrote “God Bless the U.S.A.” on the back of his tour bus in 1983, and that song has carried this nation through the Gulf War, September 11, and over 40 years of moments when America needed to feel united.
Now he will sing it one more time in the nation’s capital for the country’s 250th birthday. This feels right. (META)
