In Honor of Fallen CPD Commander Bauer, End of Watch: 13 Feb 2018

Chicago – February 18, 2018 Anything we may say today cannot diminish the impact of losing one of Chicago’s finest in the line of duty, and that is Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer with over thirty years of dedicated community service. However, the community is not alone in our personal grief or our desire to honor the fallen. The Veterans Committee of the Chicago Nightingales’ joins with other community organizations supported this mornings’ “Get Behind the Vest” Pancake Breakfast fundraiser collecting to purchase additional bullet proof vests.

Chicago Police Officers are provided with the initial vest when they join the force as mandatory protective equipment. Thereafter, they are responsible for purchasing replacements themselves, at $500 each. The vest wears out and needs to be replaced every five years or after coming in contact with a bullet, which makes them unusable. The “Get Behind the Vest” program will provide funding to help replace approximately 8,000 outdated vests.

As healthcare professionals the Chicago Nightingales’ knows all too well the journey through bereavement is not easy. Everyone experiences and deals with loss of a loved one in different ways. What is important and that is similar to our CN mission is to provide support to those countries stricken with disaster. In this sense the act of going in first, the act of going into a dangerous environment is an act of heroic self-sacrifice for the sake of others. This family too is stricken with grief, and we would like to acknowledge the kind support received from each of you, to all the Gold Star families, and in turn would like to extend our comfort, support, and assistance. ###
