Multiple award-winning novelist Liza Gino wrote Imelda’s Secret in the hopes to inspire and empower those who read about the Filipino “comfort women” and their continued struggle to find peace and justice decades after the end of World War 11. After learning about the “comfort women,” Liza embarked on a mission to build awareness of their continued plight. If anything, the goal is to help empower individuals, especially women, to have courage and take their power to control their own chosen path.

Growing up female in a very male-dominated culture impressed upon Liza that women were given very little to espouse the future they would dream for themselves. She vividly remembers being counseled not to seek a profession that was monopolized by men. The adage of a woman’s place simply did not fit Liza’s view of her future. Thankfully, her father and education from the University of the Philippines gave her the courage to pursue her life ambitions.

Indeed, not without challenges, she raised her three children as a single parent, obtained her master’s degree, and started her own business while still working in a corporate environment. Slowly and surely, Lin checked off her bucket list. The latest of which is writing the novel 1melda’s Secret, which proved to be one of her most outstanding achievements.

Based on real-life accounts, Imelda’s Secret brings into focus the horrors of World War B as experienced by two cousins. The “comfort women’s” brutal history began when they were abducted from their families, forced into sexual slavery, and stripped of their dignity. Forever emotionally scarred, the “comfort women” struggle with the trauma caused by the systemic barbaric subjugation even decades after. Imelda’s Secret exposes the experiences of “comfort women” and their secret shame in the hopes of sparking awareness and advocacy in all who read it.

After completing Imelda’s Secret, Liza embarked on the journey of self-publishing. Drawing on her experience in sales and marketing, she worked on her product. Shc designed her own book cover and worked closely with thc artists. With her consultant and printer, the book was carefully crafted with thc idea that it must be durable to be passed from one reader to another. Her publicity and marketing arm were a small retinue of friends and relatives that advocated for the message that Liza was working to share with everyone.

Imelda’s Secret won first place winner for Historical Fiction at the Royal Dragonfly Book Award ten days after its virtual book launch. These popular awards have been given for over 37 years and honor some of the finest independently-published and small press books in a wide variety of different categories. On January 2nd, Liza received her third book award, Silver Award from Literary Titan Book Awards. The Silver Award is bestowed on books that expertly deliver complex characters, intricate worlds, and thought provoking themes. The rase with which thc story is told is a reflection of the author’s talent in exercising fluent, powerful, and appropriate language. Their literary awards are given to books and authors that have astounded and amazed them with unique writing styles, vivid worlds, complex characters, and original ideas.

Liza has expressed her gratitude to her team of editors, contributors, artists, consultants, and mentors for their talents and inputs to bring Imelda’s Secret to fruition. The “comfort woman’s” situation remains unchanged. Like it or not, their story is part of our collective history. It is what defines us as human beings. Surely, no one is expendable to be tossed out like garbage. The team of Imelda’s Secret understood that this was for the “comfort women” and how to improve their living conditions was necessary. Liza wishes that it will inspire and empower the readers of Imelda’s Secret to do more.
