Captain Marvel Comic Books Skyrocket In Value

Audience approval and box office success creates greater demand for highly-collectible comics

CHICAGO – March 12, 2019 – It’s difficult to think of any other pastime that is so significantly affected by Hollywood as hobby of collecting comics. For example, Captain Marvel’s cat, Chewie made his first appearance in Giant-Size Ms. Marvel #1, published in 2006. To respect Chewbacca’s legacy, the directors changed the cat’s name to Goose which has not negatively affected sales of Giant-Size Ms. Marvel #1. The comic, originally priced at $4.99 now exceeds $55 in multiple sales since Captain Marvel was released.

Another Chewie/Goose issue that is getting a boost in sales is Captain Marvel #8, published in 2014. In this issue we see Captain Marvel’s cat revealed for what it truly is, a Flerken. Although it’s not said aloud in the film, those who stay through the credits will figure out Goose is no ordinary cat. Not long ago, Captain Marvel #8 could be purchased for $1 on eBay but with the hype surrounding the movie and Goose’s rise to fame, this issue is now commanding $15 to $20 with no signs of slowing down. Spoiler alert: you can expect the fur to fly when Rocket Raccoon comes snout-to-snout with the Flerken. An important distinction to make is that this demand is not true for the entirety of Captain Marvel comics. The only books that are in high-demand are collectively known as Key Issues: character first appearances, origin details and other significant moments that make it into the movie generate interest.
