Remedios R. Escalona March 4, 1934 – May 9, 2024
Dr. Remedios (Remy) Escalona, 90, a long-time resident of Huntley, Illinois and Northbrook, IL passed away on May 9, 2024, in Huntley, IL. She was born on March 4, 1934, in Manila, Philippines. Remedios is survived by her cherished husband of 58 years, Dr. Manuel (Manny) Escalona Jr, son Emmanuel (Noel) married to Maggie, daughter Dr. Yolanda (Yoly) married to Dr. Paul Oland and daughter Dr. Maria Estela (Estel). She has six grandchildren Justin, Serena, Nathan, Nicholas, Noah, and Dylan.
Remy is survived by her sisters Natividad Loleng, Corazon Reyes, Gloria Reyes MD, Arsenia Guy, brother Edgardo Reyes, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Arsenio and Florentina Reyes, sister and brother in law Isabel and Honorio David, brother and sister in law Guillermo and Virginia Reyes, brother in law Edilberto Loleng, brother and sister in law Remigio and Flordeliza de los Reyes, brother Manuel Reyes, brother in law Renato Guy, niece Mildred de los Reyes and niece Miriam de los Reyes.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in biology in 1954 and Doctorate in Medicine in 1959 at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila Philippines. Remy worked her 1st part of her career as senior resident in OB/GYN at Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Manila. She put her career on hold as she immigrated to the United States in 1967 to join her husband to start his medical career and raise their family. At the age of 42, Remy decided to start the 2nd part of her career. After passing her foreign medical examinations, she was accepted to a Psychiatry residency at Loyola University of Chicago School of Medicine. After completing her residency, Remy worked for the State of Illinois at the Chicago Read Mental Health Center as a staff psychiatrist until she retired in 2003.
Remy was passionate about singing, traveling, spending time with her children and grandchildren and doing charitable work. Along with Manny, Remy’s charitable work spanned the world for many years. Their volunteerism began with the District 1-A Lions with the Chicago Bayanihan and Sampaguita Lions Club. She traveled the world serving Lionism. She was a longstanding active member in promoting Filipino-American culture with the Philippine Independence Week Committee (PIWC). For years, she traveled with Norwegian American Hospital and the Philippine Medical Association of Chicago (PMAC) to the Philippines for multiple medical missions delivering medical care to those in need.
Visitation was held May 31, 2024, at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home Palatine, IL. Funeral Mass held June 1, 2024, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Palatine, IL. Interment followed at Maryhill Cemetery 8600 N. Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL.
