May The 4th Be With You

By: Kayla Tejero
Sun shines bright, and May feels right. Happy May everyone! It is so nice to see the beautiful flowers blooming. The mix of sunny and rainy days helps this beautiful sight everywhere. I always love seeing the beautiful array of tulips finally open up in my mother’s garden. This time of year marks the true season of spring. With this time of year, there is a sense of change not only with the season but within ourselves. As the weather becomes warmer onto the summer, and still holding on to the spring energy, we may find ourselves motivated and conducive to making positive changes in our lives. It’s never too late to make a change in our lives. After all, we are in control of things we want to do. We have the power and beauty to create a beautiful life. For those of us already in our careers, May is just another month for us to embrace hope for things to be better, and to offer resolve in every challenge that may come our way. However, for our college students, especially our graduating college students, this month is graduation month! Graduation is a beautiful celebration of what every college student had dreamt or hoped for. Let us hear from our four features for the month of May.
Ian says, “As a Filipino American graduate of Columbia College Chicago, I want to build a successful career in audio and music. After finishing up an internship at Chicago post-production house, Optimus, I am setting my sights on completing and releasing my band’s 3 song EP this May. From there, we’d like to spread our music with the local scene, play more shows to build our audience, and eventually record a full length album!”
Arianna says, “I recently graduated from Western Governors University with a B.S. in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. I’ve always been fascinated by computers, yet equally alarmed by how easily they can be exploited. In today’s digital age, protecting sensitive information is more crucial than ever. As a young Asian American professional, I aim to grow as a cybersecurity analyst and ultimately become an ethical hacker, using my skills to defend and empower others in an increasingly connected world.”
Gilly says, “As an Asian American graduate student, what I would like to accomplish is to be able to continue providing the opportunity to offer compassion, inspire hope and teach others the necessary skills required to overcome their current circumstances. We know that within the Asian American populations,
the stigma around mental health is really significant so I’ve found it very vital to continue to help those who want change and growth and can evolve into the people they’ve wanted to be but had never envisioned possible.“
Mikee says, “As An Asian American young adult, I want to give back to the community I was raised in because it has blessed me with so many opportunities. As a registered nurse at my local hospital, I serve and care for cardiovascular patients. The next goal for myself is to go back to school for my Masters in Education. Eventually, I would like to apply my experience and skills to teach the next generation of nurses.
