One weekend, I had a great vacation time with my 4 grandchildren visiting the Noah’s Ark & Creation Museums in Kentucky. The 5-hour drive seemed fast with so much fun creating happy memories that brings me to smile.

Did you know that research proved that smiling can actually trick the brain into thinking happy? Regardless whether your smile is authentic or not, it has the same effect. It releases happy hormones (endorphins) making us feel happier, thus altering our brain’s emotional pathway. Moreover, it has also shown that people who smile can be seen as friendly and likable by others as well as making them feel cheerier too. Smiling is contagious!

There are many great health benefits of smiling.

1. Smiling is a great stress-buster releasing tensions and anxiety. Smiling can improve our positivity and make us feel happier. Studies showed of stressed-out people while smiling, were found to have lower heart rates than those who were not smiling.

2. Smiling releases happy hormones called endorphins. When Endorphins are released, we can feel happier and more positive. Endorphins are the same hormones that are normally released when you exercise, which can make you feel much better, more motivated, and less stressed, anxious or worried.

3. Smiling makes us attractive and more approachable. Studies have proven that. Thus, this can help with work, friends, and complete strangers, as others can feel like you are easier to talk to and they are not afraid to approach you. Furthermore, this can provide an overall nicer experience when talking and interacting with someone who smiles, rather than with someone who doesn’t.

4. Smiles are contagious. When you smile, others automatically smile back. It could be a friend, work colleague, or maybe even a stranger. Again studies has shown that due to something that we all possess called Mirror Neurons, we often respond to the act of smiling by imitating it and smiling ourselves. This will also cause us to simulate the emotions that come with the action of smiling as well. Thus everybody around gets to smile because it is contagious!

5. Smiling boosts our performance. Happy people becomes happier and more positive thereby they become more motivated that improves performance and more productive. Studies have shown that being happy has a great effect on productivity in the workplace. Smiling helps us to become more productive as we can have a better mindset. On the reverse, negative emotions can cause us to become drained and less productive.

6. Smiling is a free natural painkiller and anti-depressant. Smiling has been shown to help ease any pain that you could be experiencing. As mentioned previously, smiling can release endorphins, making us feel happier and these hormones are also known as natural painkillers. They ease the pain you are experiencing.

7. Smiling is anti-aging and beauty regimen at no cost. Smiling can also make you look younger than you are as studies have shown. On average, the research has shown that you normally can look about 3 years younger. Again, it is free that costs us nothing. Moreover, smiling can naturally lift and erase some frown lines and wrinkles. Consequently, this can help us to look younger and prettier.

In other words, smiling is healthy for the body, soul and spirit individually and corporately making us feel good, look good and attractive to others.
