Happy August! I still cannot believe how fast the time has passed by. We have already gone through a little over three-fourths of the year! As we welcome this month of August, as well as the start of Fall breeze, we also welcome the start of the new school year. This year will defi nitely be different considering the current situation we are still dealing with. Personally, I am just so excited to start school and to continue to learn, even if it is through remote instruction rather than having a class in-person or face-to-face. Many of us students will have to accommodate to new changes, as the COVID-19 continues to linger, with cases on the rise. It is important for all of us to manage the daily stress of this health crisis, and to continue to take care of ourselves amidst the pandemic. On a positive note, let’s hear from our four featured college students for this month – their dreams and aspirations in life! If you’d like to be featured, please email me at tejerokayla@ gmail.com.

Carla Esmane says, “I hope to earn my nursing degree and continue my education towards becoming an FNP. After graduation, I want to apply my knowledge and skills into practice, to help people, and better the community. Also, beyond my academic aspirations, I would like to make my family proud. They have worked hard to provide a better life for me, so it is important for me to strive for success and appreciate the life that they have given me.

TJ Subang says, “As a Filipino American student, I want to display that there’s more to me than a stereotype. I want to go into school, my fi eld of work, and in public to act as a beacon of compassion and kindness.”

Kyra Bearnod says, “As a Filipino-American college student, I want to be able to give back to my parents. Going to school in the Philippines is only one sacrifi ce I’ve had to make for them, compared to the millions of sacrifi ces that they’ve made for me and my siblings. After I graduate, I hope to start working as soon as possible so that I can support myself and help ease the fi nancial burden on my mom, since she is the only one working to support our family of 6.”

Bryce Zabat says,“ My primary goal is to complete all of the undergraduate requirements for applying to medical school. I also plan to take courses that will equip me with the skills needed to thrive in the world. After my time at Lake Forest College, I plan to pursue my ambition of leaving my mark on the world by practicing medicine to the best of my ability.
