Joel Sebastian On A Destined Path To Beauty

Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Joel Sebastian on his Journey to Success

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (April 28, 2022) – There are times when one is lucky enough to be sure of what they are meant to do in this life. Joel Sebastian knew he was an artist from an early age, but it would take a while for him to know exactly what kind of artist he was always meant to be. Through trials and obstacles, Joel would go on to find his calling in be auty as a notable makeup artist and hairstylist.

Born in the Philippines, Joel grew up with a passion for makeup and fashion which would eventually translate into his career. Although he dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, Joel would go on to receive his bachelor’s degree in Business Management as a way to comply with his parent’s vision for his future. “As a young gay boy, me and my friends used to play around with makeup and dress up as a girl for fun and even years later, my friends kept on requesting me to do their makeup and hair,” he says

It was years after graduating that one of his good friends and mentor, Ed Rodriguez, asked him to assist him for his photoshoots and weddings he worked. After picking up the craft with such ease and diligence, Joel made the decision to go back to beauty school to really perfect his craft before following the path to his destined career. After working at a Beverly Hills salon as a hair assistant, he realized that what he really wanted was to oversee his own work and just four days after destiny would shift him on the track he was always meant to land on.

It was a job as a makeup consultant for Chanel Cosmetics for multiple department stores in Los Angeles that would spark a domino effect and soon enough he would be offered a position at Christian Dior Cosmetics as a manager and then be offered by Wella & Sebastian Hair Professionals to be a part of their Global Artistic Team for Makeup.While working for Wella & Sebastian Hair Professionals, Joel was given the opportunity to travel all over the US and other countries doing hair shows and photoshoots. For the last 22 years, Joel has been an independent contractor for them and has the creative freedom to do other work on the side.

Now Joel continues his work for Wella & Sebastian all while traveling all around the world and working on multiple fashion magazine editorials for top designers such as Michael Cinco and Rick Owens. Setting base in Los Angeles, Joel is also the Beauty Director for NOW Magazine LA in Beverly Hills. Joel deems traveling all around the world to places like Paris, London, and Japan to be some of his many career highlights. “I’m just very fortunate enough to be able to travel the world and love what I do,” he says. “Meeting amazing models, celebrities, and fellow artists everywhere is such a blessing for me.”

With all the cities and countries Joel has visited over the years, it’s not surprising Joel finds inspiration for his work in every place he frequents. “Sometimes I will just sit down at my favorite place, Le Cafe Marly by the Louvre in Paris and just watch people’s looks… I also find inspiration with collaborations with photographers, stylists, hairdressers, and directors,” he says.

In all the work Joel does, he puts his heart and soul into it to ensure that the people he works with are as equally inspired to give their best work. Joel looks forward to continuing working on many editorials with his NOW Magazine LA family and traveling around with them as well. As an artist who wakes up every morning and gets to do what he loves, Joel hopes to spread that wealth of success by becoming a mentor for aspiring makeup artists who look to break into the fashion industry.
