Thank you from Guzon Family

Dear Tita Veronica,

I’d like to take a moment to thank you for your many years of friendship that you gave my dad. He was so proud to be a part of the VIA Times and Chicago Philippine Reports TV (CPRTV). I can fondly remember being with him as he worked late nights at your residence on Sheridan Rd (the birthplace of Via Times) and the many bundles of newspapers that we would deliver throughout the Filipino community. He had a few rough years, but I hope you can smile when you think back on the fun ones.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Jema Guzon Villaluna (EDITOR’S NOTE) Please read Jess Guzon’s Obituary on our Funeral Page in this issue. We remember our fun, glorious days with him, and deep condolences and prayers for the repose of his soul.)

Chicago sees 14.8% increase in cost of living

Via Times,

I’m writing to let you know about a new report from Filterbuy looking at the U.S. metropolitan areas with the largest increases in the cost of living over the last decade. From 2010 to 2020, the housing and food and beverage sectors saw the greatest increases in cost, with increases of 25.7% and 21.2%, respectively, while transportation had a much lower 4.1% increase. Energy saw a decrease of 6.8% over the same period. But in recent months, transportation and energy have seen some of the fastest increases. Of course, increases vary widely by location. Researchers ranked metros according to the percentage change in the cost of living between 2010 and 2020.

The analyss found that residents of the Chicago metro area experienced an increase of 14.8% in the cost of living between 2010 and 2020.

Please feel free to republish or use the findings in your own write-up. If you choose to use the analysis, please link to the original report, which includes a table with data on more than 350 metros and all 50 states: https:// filterbuy.com/resources/cost-ofliving- in-us/ If you have any questions about the analysis or need additional information, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Build Back Better isn’t a path to socialism

Dear Via Times.

Just wanted to flag our Select Committee’s new CNN Business opinion piece on the historic early childhood development investments in the Build Back Better Act (provided below).

CNN Business Opinion: Build Back Better isn’t a path to socialism. It’s an investment in our nation’s children.

“There is ample evidence that high-quality education at an early age helps break the cycle of poverty and meaningfully expands social and economic mobility. That’s one of the reasons why House Democrats included billions in federal funding for universal preschool in the Build Back Better Act,” wrote Chairman Himes. “Unfortunately, the historic legislative package is stalled since Senator Joe Manchin said he wouldn’t vote for it. But if we’re ever to address the embarrassing lack of investment in our nation’s children, Congress must convince Manchin to support the bill.”

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any story ideas and interview requests.
