Happy Independence Day to America, land of the free and home of the brave. We celebrate this popular holiday with parades, backyard barbecues, boating on the lake, or taking a dip in the pool. I celebrated the 4th with friends and family, munching on hamburgers and watching the fi reworks show. Independence Day signifi es the adoption of the Declaration of Independence announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain. Many come to the United States from various parts of the world for greater opportunity. Some may come to live out the ‘American Dream’. The diverse demographic of the United States gives true meaning to it being a “melting pot” where many cultures and ethnicities come together to make up our nation. I like to think that this idea can apply to us college students. After college, we offer our talents, knowledge and skills to serve and contribute to society, ultimately improving life for all. With that said, let us hear from our four featured college students!

Angelica Borromeo says, “As a Filipino Asian American college student, I have always been proud to showcase my identity and culture wherever I go. I was a part of the executive board for the Asian American and Pacifi c Islander Association (AAPIA) at Aurora University, and it allowed me to be an example for others to live their lives boldly without being ashamed of their background. I hope to continue being this example when I graduate in May 2024, striving to become an Oncology nurse, and to demonstrate what a proud culturally competent and diverse individual we all can be.”

Nicole Park says, “After graduation, I will be moving to New Taipei City, Taiwan to teach English for a year with the Fulbright ETA program. My goal post-return to America is to matriculate into medical school, with my ultimate dream being a physician operating my own independent clinic. In Taiwan, I hope to develop a culturally nuanced perspective and build long-lasting relationships with my students, which will be crucial to understanding my patients and community as a physician.”

Makayla Enorme says, “As an Asian American college student, I strive to excel academically, actively engage in cultural organizations, and build a strong network of professionals. After graduation, with my marketing major, I aspire to pursue a career in marketing or a related fi eld, leveraging my cultural background and skills to contribute to the industry, promote diversity and inclusivity, and continuously grow both personally and professionally. Being in Chicago offers exciting opportunities to connect with professionals and explore the city’s vibrant business landscape.”

Brian Lieo says, “During my school year, I want to develop my skills and knowledge in my degree, graduate with experience, and know how to get a successful career in the world. Building my involvement and networking with other students to build opportunities to connect with professors, professionals to gain mentorship and experience.

After graduation I want to fi nd a full-time job that is related to Computer Science and a career in Cyber Security.”
