The Philippine Independence Week Committee (PIWC) 2017 is conducting an ESSAY WRITING CONTEST
in celebration of Philippine Independence Day. The educational youth activity is open to Filipino/American
high school students. Cash prizes ($300, $200, $150, $100, $50) will be awarded to the best five winners of the
contest during the PIWC Gala Night on June 17, 2017 at the Marriott O’Hare, 8535 Higgins Rd., Chicago, IL
60631. All participating essayists will receive $20 each on the contest day.

RULES:
1. Contestant must be of Filipino heritage (at least one parent).
2. Contestant must be a current student (Jr. High to Senior High- 7th -12th grade).
3. Essay writing will be done on the spot with the use of a computer/laptop.
4. Topic of the essay will be given prior to the contest period. Lead questions and prompts will
be given to guide the contestant on what to write about.
5. The essay, consisting of about 500 words, will be written in English.
6. There will be 3 judges whose decision will be final.
7. There will be a $20 bonus for each essayist.
8. Prizes will be awarded during the Philippine Independence Day Gala Night/Dinner Ball
(Saturday, June 17, 2017) at the Marriot O’Hare, 8535 Higgins Rd., Chicago, IL 60631. (Essay
winners get free dinner tickets).
RUBRIC/ SCORING
Content (correct thesis statement, well-developed support paragraphs (30) ________________
with specific details and examples, well-developed concluding
paragraphs, all focused on given topic, attention getter in the
introductory paragraph, effective strategy for concluding the
essay).
Organization (development of the whole essay using either the deductive (30) ______________
or the inductive method (preferably the deductive method), use
of topic sentence introducing each support paragraph, arrangement of
details in each support paragraph using either the chronological,
spatial, or logical order, use of coherence /transition devices where
needed, restatement of the thesis and summary of the main points in the
concluding paragraph).
Style and clarity (variety of sentence structures, correct word usage, (30) ________________
punctuation marks, spelling, and grammar)
Mechanics and format (required headers, appropriate essay title, space, margin, (10) _________
