Magandang Araw sa inyo lahat and I wish you a speedy recovery over the disappointing loss of our well-respected athlete, Manny Pacquiao. I am sure that it has brought down our spirits just a little, but remember, we as Fil-Ams are resilient and can overcome anything!

With the summer just around the corner, many of us all want to get to wear our summer clothing and many of us want to potentially show-off our physique and particularly want to be active. Being Pinoys, we have certain advantages… WE AGE WELL!!! Especially the ladies.

How many times have you been carded or have been complimented that when they see you with your kids who are teenagers, the response of non-Pinoys are, “When did you have kids? When you were a baby?” Our kababayan women love that, but it’s true. For the guys, we get some of the compliments too, as we are blessed with good skin.

How about physique? Many of us guys (and I am one of them) love to eat and we may not always look big but we show a bigger-than-normal gut…, the ever-so-difficult-to-lose beer belly…

Well, even though we age well, we should still take good care of ourselves, so the next few columns I will share healthy eating and showcase Fil-Ams who practice this mindset professionally. Not only do they look great from the face, but also their physique, and more importantly, their health.

Remember, my kababayans, we live in one of the greatest countries in the world and we have excessive access to everything, but our good genetics are not going to last forever. With that being said, let’s eat right, be active and enjoy life for a nice long time so we all can continue to receive those great compliments.

So here is who I am writing about. Her name is Jennifer Stolarz, and she is a professional personal trainer. She has also competed as a personal trainer model. She eats like no other, especially when she is with the boys but obviously works really hard to maintain her physique and stay in shape for her clients. You can’t trust a fat trainer.

Anyway a little about her…She was born and raised in Montana. Her mother is full-blooded Pinay Made In The Philippines. Her father is Polish American. She has one brother. She has always been an outdoor-type of person, athletic, into sports, etc… Her mom and her grandmother also Pinoy cooked often at home. Many of her mom’s siblings would visit often as she is a big-family person, but many of them have had ailments and bad health issues, and this inspired her even more to get educated in nutrition. She wants to live for a long time and also to help people do the same…make some sacrifices, but still enjoy food.

Her guidance on nutrition, especially for us Pinoys….
1. Moderation is key
2. Do not over-consume white rice and, yes, I understand my kababayans, I eat everything with rice. It’s funny going to school in the Philippines we used to have more rice than ulam. As much as we love it we need to reduce the intake; even occasionally, change to brown rice. Ultimately, she says to stay away from anything white as it is usually processed. So white pasta, as well.
3. Eat your vegetables!!! We have a ton of that available for us.
4. Meat is good source of protein but moderate yourself and limit the fried. I know we love fried and limit the skin and limit the fat.
5. Eat fresh fruit.
6. Minimize processed food. Canned goods, candies, and anything that are high on preservatives.
7. MSG, which is in many of the instant flavor packets. Better to use the real thing.

Her guidance on being active and achieving your health goals

1. Be active! Get off the couch, limit your T.V. time, and stop making excuses.
2. HIRE HER!!! She will provide results and literally kick your butt into shape.
3. Be committed.
4. Make a goal that is realistic and go after it Jen’s message is clear… Enjoy life, enjoy food, be active and stick around, because your family and friends want to be around you for as long as possible.

Much appreciated… But we are not done. Just like my past columns, she is going to share a recipe that you can prepare at home. It is her favorite dish that her mom still makes for her when she is home for dinner. Now the dish is a bit healthier when prepared.

Salmon, and Jen recommends wild or farm-raised. Have all the good fats that have omega 3 good for your memory and overall cholesterol.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon of olive oil

1 medium onion diced

2 garlic cloves minced

1 medium tomato diced

2 teaspoons of chili sambal

3 each tamarind ½ cup fresh lime juice

1 tablespoon of patis

2 cups of green beans

1 lb of salmon cut in 1 inch pieces

2 cups fresh kale chopped Salt and ground pepper as needed.

Directions: Get your pot and heat up the oil. Once oil is hot enough, place onions and garlic in pot to cook till onion is translucent. Then place the cups of water.

Place the tamarind in the water. Bring to boil then place the salmon in there and cook to medium heat. Once salmon looks cooked, then add your green beans and kale.

Cook in medium heat, then allow simmering.

Add the patis (fish sauce) and stir. Then season with salt and pepper to your liking.

My kababyans, let’s continue to eat, enjoy family; connect with friends and think of good health. The season to enjoy the outdoors is here and in the Midwest, we should enjoy the summer as we have had a winter that was too long. Also let’s take care of ourselves; many Pinoys especially here in the states are known to become diabetics. Frankly, many of our population are diabetics and more often it’s not because we are overweight. The reason is that we eat too much white rice and processed sugar. This is common that passes on to the next generation. Sana sa column, lahat tayo ay magiging mas malusog… The right way, the healthy way…

I hope you enjoyed my column and look forward to sharing more great stories and recipes. If there is anything out there that you would like for me to talk about, do research on the best that represents a great Fil-Am, please do not hesitate to let me know.

It has truly been an honor and pleasure sharing with you all. Maraming salamat! Till next month…
