
Julian Lobigas, Jr. February 24, 1941 ~ December 23, 2024
Vicky Justo’s only brother, Julian Lobigas, Jr. passed away Monday, December 23, 2024. The only boy of eight siblings. He was 83 years old.
Julian was single, no wife, no children but had several nephews, nieces and grand nephews and nieces!!! He was loved for his kindness and generosity.
He will be dearly missed by his family members and friends.
He achieved recognition as a Malolos City Dangal Ng Lipi Awardee in sports for reaching the status of National Chess Master in 1969; UP University Chess Champion 1961, 1962 and 1963; National Student Chess Champion in 1963.
Julian was a team member who participated in the Olympic Chess Competitions in Germany in 1970 and in Yugoslavia in 1972. Olympic Chess Team members included Eugene Torre, Julian Lobigas, Edgar de Castro, Ruben Rodriguez, Rodolfo Cardoso, Glicerio Badilles, Ernesto Naranja and Samuel Estimo. Julian became an International Chess Master Chess Master in 1972 after participating in those two Olympic Chess Competitions.
Julian did not finish his Engineering degree at the University of the Philippines due to financial hardship; but when he immigrated to the US and found work, he pursued his education and finished his Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences with majors in Mathematics at the Northwestern University in Chicago.
Julian worked at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago for 19 years. He was an Assistant Pay Master at the MWRD when he retired.
