Changes in Weather and People

As the beautiful Chicago weather is sadly approaching its end, so many parties, concerts, picnics, family vacations and outdoor activities in our community seem to be on a high gear, to beat the change of the weather from hot (humid) to cool (cold) weather.

As you can glean from this exciting issue, parties abound and alive in our home Chicago. And, more are coming up in our exciting September Fall issue.

Just like the weather change, people change, too. In Via Times family, just like in any other familial situations, there are movements and/or changes that we cannot expect to control. We are letting our readers know that our Wassup?!! Columnist Jovie Calma is no longer associated with Via Times and CPRTV as a TV host. Any references or mentions of her association with VT/CPRTV is null and void and will not be honored. Please be formally informed. We wish Jovie the best of luck in all her endeavors.

Lovely greetings for their 24th wedding anniversary celebration to our in-house poet Maria Victoria Smith (Marivic for short) and her ever-loving husband Steve who traveled far from Puget Sound, Washington to visit and celebrate with their Chicago friends for the special occasion. They held staggered celebrations with different friends in different days in different Chicago locations while here. See photos taken of the dinner celeb at Fogo de Chao Chicago on page 19.

Warm thanks to Ms. Elaine Lehman, FACC Executive Director, for sending out birthday greeting to Joe Mauricio, VT editorialist and columnist, to her FACC membership…”Our heartfelt (belated) Birthday Wishes to JOE MAURICIO, Via Times Publication/ CPRTV, FACC supporter and friend! We hope you enjoyed your Day and wish you a Wonderful Year Ahead! We also extend much love and congratulations to him on his marriage to Veronica Leighton, FACC friend, mentor, and Advisory Board member! Joe shares this auspicious day with Manuel L. Quezon, born in 1878 and the first president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944, and William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton, born in 1946 and 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001.” See photos taken on page 7.

Coming up in our next issue is the birthday spread of our senior editor, Elsie Sy-Niebar, who’s turning 80 on August 24th. A Gatsby- themed wear is a must-dress code for the occasion. Sounds like fun! Happy birthday to you, Elsie.

A must-read news item in Veronica’s Vibes on page 5 wherein the plans for the return of the historical Bells of Balangiga, taken in Balangiga, Eastern Samar church in 1901, has been confirmed by the US. The bells were taken as war booty by American soldiers more than a century after they last tolled to signal an attack on their comrades. Assigned by President Duterte to accompany the return is Mayor Rita Gomez Sanders, a Filipino American Mayor from Bellevue, Nebraska, who was honored as a recipient of the Chicago Filipino Asian American Hall of Fame award in 2017.

Enjoy our romantic August cover featuring Rev. Pastor Pascual Tayco and Mrs. Lydia Rhoton on their 5th wedding anniversary celebration and renewal of vows held last May 27, 2018. Their exciting love story with more wedding pictorial spread are on pages 36 and 37.

Have an enjoyable remaining days of Chicago summer, and fun reading of VT’s exciting and hot (like the weather) August 2018 issue.##
