Travel Advisory for The Bahamas Due to Crime and Shark Attacks

The U.S. Department of State has recently updated its travel advisory for The Bahamas to Level 2, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to potential crime and shark attacks. The advisory highlights that violent crimes, such as armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults, can occur throughout the islands, but are more prevalent in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands.
The advisory specifically mentions the “Over the Hill” area in Nassau, south of Shirley Street, as a high-risk area where gang-related violence has resulted in fatalities. Travelers are also advised to be cautious at vacation rental properties, particularly those without private security. The Department of State suggests securing doors and windows and refraining from opening the door to unknown individuals.
In addition to crime, the advisory also warns of risks associated with boating and beach activities. The boating industry in The Bahamas is reportedly not well regulated, leading to incidents of injuries and fatalities. Watercraft may not be adequately maintained, and some operators may lack proper licensing and insurance. As a result, U.S. government employees are barred from renting jet skis and personal watercraft from independent operators on New Providence and Paradise islands.
The advisory also notes reports of sexual assaults by jet ski operators and in the vicinity of downtown Nassau beaches. Travelers are advised to remain vigilant of their surroundings, particularly in public restrooms.
Shark attacks are another concern highlighted in the advisory. Recent incidents have resulted in severe injuries and fatalities. In February, two American tourists were attacked by a shark at a popular resort in Bimini Bay, part of the westernmost island in The Bahamas. They were subsequently airlifted to New Providence for further treatment.
The Department of State confirmed to Fox News Digital that the travel advisory for The Bahamas was previously at Level 2 before the update on March 31. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation has yet to respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
